Home' Independence : Independence Vol 31 No 2 Nov 2006 Contents Secondary school teachers can now achieve
a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
online and with credit for their existing
experience thanks to Accredited Online
Training [AOT], which has developed the
only fast track course of its type in Australia.
AOT's Managing Director Paul Lange said
the Secondary Teachers Fast Track training
program was in high demand.
"In high schools today, there is a big push
on teaching vocational skills which in some
cases, requires teachers to do additional
study to gain a Certificate IV in Training
and Assessment (TAA40104) or hold the
"We found that secondary school teachers
were not only frustrated with the length
of available courses, the shortest being six
months, but also discouraged by having to
waste time covering old ground and repeat
study in areas they are already competent in.
Mr Lange said that the company made a
decision in mid 2005 to undertake research
to investigate how the knowledge, skills
and experience of Australian high school
teachers could meet the requirements of the
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
AOT's success in gaining accreditation for
the shortened course was a combination of
a number of factors.
"We applied our expertise in developing on
line courses and gathered feedback from
over 500 people who have completed our
standard Online Certificate IV in Training
"We also invited Associate Professor
Neil Anderson Deputy Head, School of
Education, at the James Cook University to
assist in developing the shortened course,"
Prof. Anderson comes well credentialed with
20 years classroom experience, and when
working on the project undertook extensive
research Australia wide over many weeks.
Prof Anderson believes there is a broader
benefit to AOT's Fast Track Program and
said "It will encourage more teachers to
gain additional skills because at the moment
they are being put off by the length and
repetitive nature of courses."
